Queenstown Lakes District Council is telling residents of Arrowtown to boil their drinking water.
Routine testing has found E.coli bacteria in the town's water supply.
The council says residents connected to the supply should boil all drinking water until Friday morning.
It says tests will continue over the next few days and contractors will flush the water mains to get rid of the contamination.
