Watermelons cleared from Auckland motorway

8:11 am on 21 March 2010

Two tonnes of watermelons that caused the closure of part of Auckland's southern motorway have been cleared from the road.

The fruit fell from a delivery truck, which rolled south of the Newmarket viaduct just before 6am on Sunday. No one was injured in the incident.

Police say diggers and sweepers had to be used to shift the mess from all three lanes and hose down the road, which re-opened about 8.30am.
