A disqualified driver wanted by police for his involvement in a crash that killed a woman in the Far North has been arrested after he checked himself out of hospital.

Police say that earlier this month, Warren John Jenkins, 49, was driving a Nissan Navara that crossed the centre line on State Highway 10 near Kerikeri, colliding with a car. Its driver, Katherine Kennedy, died of multiple injuries.

Wine containers were found in his car and police had been waiting for the results of blood tests before they laid charges. However, Mr Jenkins walked out of Whangarei Hospital without telling police.

He was arrested on Friday morning in Auckland and charged with driving while disqualified. Police say further charges may follow.
