Council votes for overnight ban to deter boy-racers

7:21 pm on 22 April 2010

The Christchurch City Council has unanimously voted to make it illegal to drive on some city streets overnight in order to clamp down on boy-racers.

Before Thursday, there were 29 industrial streets with night-time bans on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The council has voted to extend those bans to apply seven nights a week.

Council staff advised councillors that police had reported problems with boy-racers in these industrial areas during early parts of the week.

They also warned the council to consider prohibitions seriously to ensure the problem was not simply moved around the city.

Councillor Yani Johanson voiced his concern that this would make the city look unsafe, but supported the move as long as prohibitions were only imposed as a last resort.
