MP wants lower speed limit at danger spots

Waimakariri MP Clayton Cosgrove is calling for a lower speed limit on the road where three young people were killed in a crash.

A car carrying five people crossed the centre line and ploughed head-on into a bus on Main North Road near Christchurch on Saturday morning. Three of its occupants were killed and the other two seriously injured.

It's one of a spate of accidents to have occurred on State Highway 1 south of Woodend, says Mr Cosgrove, who wants the speed limit there and in other dangerous spots with a history of accidents reduced from 100 km/h and enforced to keep the roads safer.

The Labour MP is writing to the Transport Minister about it and arranging a meeting with local residents and transport officials in order to lobby for the change.

He says he has lobbied for the change before, but was told the speed limit on a highway could not be reduced.
