Street race cars in crash

3:35 pm on 5 May 2010

Police are investigating two car crashes on the outskirts of Palmerston North that appear to be the result of a street race.

They say a patrol car began following two dark coloured Honda Civics that were travelling at more than 100km per hour on Pioneer Highway at about 11.20pm on Tuesday.

The patrol found one of the cars had crashed at the intersection of Rongotea Road and No 1 Line. Two men inside were un-injured.

The driver, 16, has been charged with stealing the car and his passenger, also aged 16, has been charged with getting into it unlawfully.

Other police found the second Honda Civic had crashed near the city boundary, killing a man, 25, who was a passaenger. The driver is in hospital.
