Home-made explosive device found in dumped car

Police in South Auckland are investigating what they say is a home-made explosive device found in an abandoned car.

About 30 people were evacuated from their homes for about two hours following the discovery in Otahuhu at about 5.30pm on Wednesday.

A cordon was placed around a vehicle at Seaside Park at the end of Princess St East, after a resident reported to police that it had not moved since Saturday.

Inspector Denise Traill says a bomb disposal squad was called to the scene.

She says they will be contacting the registered owner of the car, and further investigations will be carried out.

The vehicle was towed from the area and nearby roads were then reopened.
