Antarctic patient in stable condition

9:53 am on 15 September 2010

A man brought to New Zealand on a mercy flight from Antarctica is described as being in a stable condition in hospital.

An RNZAF Orion aircraft returned to Christchurch on Tuesday night after two attempts to collect the man from the US base at McMurdo Sound.

Squadron Leader Kavae Tamariki says things ran smoothly on the third attempt after the Orion managed to leave early enough on Tuesday to reach the airfeild at Scott Base during daylight.

It is not routine to fly to the continent at this time of year, but Squadron Leader Tamariki says the air force has a lot of experience in landing there.
