An elderly couple in Hamilton have been terrorised by a home invader who threatened them with a knife, police say.
The couple, in their 70s, were awoken and confronted by a man dressed in dark clothing at their Seddon Rd home, at about 6.30am.
Police say the man had gone from room to room in the house, smashing glassware and throwing food before entering the couple's bedroom.
A police dog and handler arrived at the scene within minutes but could only track the offender a short distance before the scent was lost in the wind and rain.
Sergeant Dale Smith is appealing for information from the public and reminding people to check that their doors are locked.
