Taranaki gardener of the year

9:07 am on 1 October 2010

A kuia from Patea with 37 mokopuna and 35 moko tuarua (great grandchildren), is this year's Taranaki gardener of the year.

Waatea News reports Harriet Rei from Te Atiawa has helped hundreds of people to re-learn Maori gardening techniques.

She and husband Spencer spend a lot of time in the garden.

Mrs Rei says the quality of her produce spiked when she returned to the traditional Maori planting calendar, by the moon.

She has qualified for the national title. Voting forms are in this month's edition of the New Zealand Gardener magazine.
