A former Women's Refuge chief executive says tribal leaders aren't doing enough to address the disportionately high number of Maori child abuse cases.
Merepeka Raukawa-Tait told a coroner's inquest into the 2007 death of Nia Glassie that the Rotorua three-year-old's whakapapa should have been her guarantee of safety and protection, but instead she was failed by her family and her tribe.
Mrs Raukawa-Tait told Waatea News that the coroner was keen to get input from Maori but she and one other person were the only ones that fronted.
