Wairoa police find gang members closing ranks

7:47 am on 3 November 2010

Police investigating two gang-related shootings in Wairoa say local gang members are closing ranks and refusing to co-operate with their enquiries.

A 48-year-old man was shot and injured at a Wairoa service station on Friday night. Earlier last week, a 17-year-old man was shot outside the town's Mongrel Mob headquarters.

The car involved in Friday's shooting was discovered burnt-out in Putorino, halfway between Napier and Wairoa, on Monday.

Detectives say gang members are difficult to deal with but they're continuing to try to talk to several relevant people.

Police, the Wairoa district mayor and the local electorate MP are meeting on Wednesday morning to discuss what they can do about the town's gang problem.
