Agencies investigating a couple who face serious child abuse charges say their personnel have been badly affected by working on the investigation.

Police in West Auckland have charged the mother and father of five children with 36 charges of child abuse and injury.

They have been investigating the couple for the past month since being called to their home during a domestic violence incident.

The couple's daughter, aged nine, and four other siblings have been taken into care by Child Youth & Family.

Police say the girl will need ongoing psychological and other specialist treatment.

Both CYF and police say their staff have been affected by their involvement.
