Christmas travel disrupted

10:51 am on 20 December 2010

The Christmas travel plans of a growing number of New Zealanders are being disrupted by the bad weather that has closed Europe's busiest airport.

At least three Air New Zealand flights in and out of Heathrow airport in London have been cancelled and others are facing delays.

Heathrow airport is still trying to clear 30 tonnes of snow from each aircraft parking stand, in the hope the airport can re-open on Sunday night.

Passengers who choose to leave New Zealand for Britain are being warned their flights might not make it there.

United Travel general manager John Willson says Christmas is the worst time for an airport such as Heathrow to close.

House of Travel retail director Brent Thomas says it will take days to clear the backlog of passengers.

He fears the number of people affected could reach the thousands if Heathrow does not re-open soon.
