Water supply back, but still no power for some

5:45 pm on 22 December 2010

Water has been restored to about 200 homes in the Dunedin suburb of Opoho.

The supply was cut on Tuesday afternoon when high winds uprooted a tree, damaging a water pipe.

A repair crew has set up a temporary bypass to ensure supply, though the Dunedin City Council is advising residents that there may be initial discolouration as it returns to normal.

As for power supply, Delta says 200 customers were without electricity earlier on Wednesday, as strong winds brought trees down onto power lines, but that number is now down to 120.

Delta's network services manager, Lindsay McLellan, says he expects power to be restored to threequarters of them by 8pm and the rest by 10pm.

Twelve of Powernet's customers in Southland and Otago are still without electricity. More than 5000 were affected on Tuesday, but most had their power restored overnight and on Wednesday morning.
