'Speed drinking' bar not getting licence back

The High Court has upheld a decision not to renew the liquor licence of a Hamilton bar known for so-called speed drinking.

In July the Liquor Licensing Authority refused the Pie Lab bar a new licence, and now a High Court judge has dismissed an appeal against that decision.

The new judgment is being supported by the Waikato District Health Board, which says it puts other bars on notice.

It says the decision shows the courts recognise bar managers who indulge in irresponsible or predatory practices.

Investigators say they found red-coloured vomit on the bar's floor at least 10 times in the year to July. The bar argued that the vomit should not be regarded as evidence of people being drunk or drinking excessively.
