Traffic has finally cleared heading north on State Highway 1 out of Wellington.
The roads through the Paremata/Plimmerton area were heavily congested earlier on Christmas Day as motorists made their way to Christmas and holiday destinations.
Motorists were advised at one point to either delay departure or be prepared for considerable delays going through the area.
