Man's death in Coromandel 'not suspicious'

4:28 pm on 5 January 2011

Police say it appears a man whose body was found in a pine plantation on the Coromandel Peninsula died as the result of a fall.

A post-mortem has been carried out on the body of Cem Erbay, who disappeared while walking home from a New Year's Eve concert in Whitianga and was found in scrub in Matarangi on Monday.

Foul play is being ruled out at this stage. The pathologist believes the 19-year-old died after he fell, hurting himself in multiple ways.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Greene says those injuries, combined with a heart condition Mr Erbay suffered, were the major causes of his death.

Police will focus on establishing Mr Erbay's final movements between when he went missing and when he was found.

The death been referred to the Coroner.
