The police in Waikato are urging parents to supervise young sailors after two boys were injured off Pauanui,in the Coromandel.

An 11-year-old boy was airlifted to Auckland's Starship Hospital on Friday evening with multiple serious injuries and a 12-year-old was taken to Thames Hospital for observation.

Police say it appears two small boats collided, and they're concerned about the age and experience of those involved.

One of the boats was being piloted by a 16-year-old, the other by one of the younger boys.
