Man arrested after AOS standoff in Northland

6:33 am on 16 January 2011

A man sparked an Armed Offenders Squad call-out in Northland, after police say he lunged at an officer with a butcher's knife.

He was being arrested at his Kaikohe home for breaching bail conditions.

The police say the man injured himself in the chest while he was struggling with the constable this morning but continued to try to attack him from the floor.

They say he then threatened to stab his partner if the officer did not leave.

The officer managed to deploy a taser, forcing the man to release his partner.

The police say he then barricaded himself inside, threatening to blow himself up using a gas bottle.

Northland AOS officers negotiated with the man for four hours before forcing their way into the house and restraining him.

A 28-year-old forestry worker has appeared in court charged with threatening to kill, aggravated assault and resisting the police.
