Police say they are disgusted by the actions of a driver accused of stealing a car belonging to an couple who stopped to help him.
The man's car had left the road State Highway 2, south of Wairoa, on Sunday.
Police say while the couple, both 63, were helping the man, he got into their car and drove off.
The driver and the couple's car were found in Whanganui on Monday.
Police say they are investigating further incidents the man may have been involved in during his trip to Whanganui.
A man was due to appear in the Whanganui District Court on Monday in relation to the incident.
