A bomb caught by fishermen in a trawl net near Dunedin has been identified as a harmless practice round.
The corroded device was hauled out of the ocean on Tuesday morning about 3km north-east of Taiaroa Head on the tip of the Otago Peninsula.
An army bomb disposal unit examined the 50-centimetre-long device with fins on the back at Carey's Bay on Tuesday.
Senior Sergeant Bruce Ross says the device is an 11kg training round used for target practice but would not explode like a traditional bomb.
Mr Ross says he does not know how long the device had been in the water, but it is possible it was dropped in the 1950s.
