A large fire has gutted an historic mill in Ashburton.

The Fire Service says more than 40 firefighters began trying to contain the fire at 6.50am on Thursday.

Senior station officer Kevin Donaldson says the blaze is under control but parts of the four-storey building are in danger of collapse.

Mr Donaldson says people may have been working in the building when the fire started but there have been no injuries.

He says investigators are at the scene but the cause of the fire is still unknown.
