Two people have died at the scene of a two-car crash on State Highway 29, near the township of Karapiro in Waikato.
St John Ambulance says five other people were injured in the smash, just after 4pm on Sunday.
It says they sustained injuries ranging from critical to minor.
The three most seriously injured were airlifted to Waikato Hospital, and two others were taken by ambulance.
