NZ company named in emissions trading deal

Carbon experts are baffled at reports of a New Zealand company taking part in a large emissions trading deal.

Reuters news agency and several news websites say Ukraine is selling a number of emissions credits to a New Zealand company, Tawhaki International, along with the UK arm of Japan's Nomura bank and a Swiss firm.

At a total of $US3.5 billion, ($NZ5.6 billion), the deal would provide credits to greenhouse gas emissions elsewhere.

But carbon experts in New Zealand say they have no knowledge of any company called Tawhaki and there is no record of Tawhaki International on the companies register.

Tawhaki is a character from Maori mythology.
