Two New Zealand cities are in the top 25 of a British survey that ranks the liveability of 140 major centres.

Auckland is rated 12th and Wellington 23rd in the Economist intelligence unit's 2009 "liveability" survey.

It assessed 140 cities based on stability, healthcare, education, infrastructure, and culture and environment.

Vancouver is ranked the best city to live in followed by Vienna and Melbourne.

In total, nine of the top 20 cities are in Canada or Australia.

The worst city to live in is Harare, in Zimbabwe.
