8:16 pm on 17 April 2011

Police in Hastings have begun a homicide investigation following the discovery of a body in a house.

The body of a man in his fifties was discovered at about 8.15pm on Saturday in the suburb of St Leonards.

He is believed to have lived in the house but has not been formally identified.

Police were alerted after a neighbour contacted them after the man had not been seen for several days.

Twelve detectives are investigating.

Detective Senior Sergeant, Dave de Lange says a forensic examination of the home is being held on Sunday. Officers were also making inquiries into the man's recent movements.

Investigators say the forensic examination of the property is likely to continue for some time.

A post mortem will take place in Wellington on Monday.
