Subsidy cuts blamed for higher early childhood fees

3:05 pm on 19 April 2011

Early childhood education groups are blaming subsidy cuts by the Government for the biggest jump in early childhood fees on record.

An increase of 12% was highlighted in the latest inflation figures.

The Government did away with higher funding rates for services where more than 80% of teachers are qualified.

Many services have raised fees by about $40 per child per week.

They say the increases were not made lightly and services and the families that use them want to retain a fully-qualified teaching workforce.

The Labour Party says fee rises are not over yet. MP Sue Moroney says some services will re-set their fees in the middle of this year.
