Nurses angry at Nelson rest home closure

Nurses' union, the New Zealand Nurses' Organisation, is considering legal action against a rest home company for closing a home housing Christchurch earthquake refugees after two months.

Twenty-three jobs will be lost.

Oceania Group announced it was closing the Omaio Rest Home in Nelson because it was uneconomic to keep it operating.

The home was re-opened in February to house elderly Christchurch people displaced by the 22 February earthquake. Prior to that the home had been closed for two years.

Among those losing their jobs are eight nurses. A spokesperson for their union, Jackie McGrath, says Oceania's redundancy offer of four weeks' pay is unacceptable.
