Insurance company State is urging holidaymakers to help avoid tiredness over Easter by taking advantage of free food and hot drinks at five state highway rest stops it is providing over the weekend.
Ministry of Transport figures for 2010 show tiredness was a factor in 51 road deaths, while 179 people suffered serious injuries and 698 suffered minor injuries as a result of fatigue.
Rest stop locations:
VTNZ testing station (SH1) south of Putaruru - Friday 9am-1pm
Lewis Pass Engineers Camp rest area (SH7) - Friday 10am-6pm
Uretiti Weigh Station (SH1) 30km south of Whangarei - Monday 10am-6pm
Ohakea Weigh Station (SH1) just south of Bulls - Monday 10am-6pm.
Ealing rest area on (SH1) 110km south of Christchurch - Monday 10am-6pm.
