9:00 pm on 28 April 2011

Police say they have opened a homicide inquiry following the death of a six-month old Waikato girl from apparent non-accidental head injuries.

The child, named as Serenity Jay Scott-Dinnington of Ngaruawahia, was admitted to Waikato hospital on Tuesday with apparent non-accidental head injuries before being flown to Auckland's Starship Hospital.

Police say her life-support was turned off on Thursday afternoon and she died a short time later

Forensic investigators have been conducting a scene examination at the house where the baby had been living and they say that will continue during the coming days.

A post-mortem will be carried out in Auckland on Friday.
