Prayer services held for those affected by recent disasters

Churches of different denominations invited their communities around the country to join them in a Pacific Prayer Day on Saturday.

The focus was to be on remembering those affected by recent disasters, including the Christchurch earthquakes, the earthquake and tsunami in Japan and the Pike River mine tragedy.

The national leader of the New Zealand Baptists, Rodney Macann, said many people are struggling with the uncertainty of life, and this was a chance for those who might not normally attend church to go along and pray.

He said most of the churches taking part would hold a short midday service.
