Parking spy car gathers $268,000

Wellington City Council has gathered $268,000 in parking fines using a car mounted with a camera - the first in the country.

Since July, the modified car has been cruising the streets of the capital photographing motorists committing parking infringments such as stopping on yellow lines and at bus stops.

Documents obtained by Radio New Zealand News show $10,000 infringement notices have so far been issued and $268,000 of revenue collected.

More than 1800 appeals against infringements have been lodged and 536 tickets have been waived.

About 20% of the tickets have been issued on one street alone, The Terrace.

The taxi industry says the roving enforcement car is unfairly penalising its drivers.

Taxi Federation executive director Tim Reddish says cabs have to pick up and drop off passengers outside premises where there's no parking, and the only option is to park illegally.

Mr Reddish says the council has in the past had a tolerance period for taxis to park, but the council says the rules apply to everyone.
