Flyover options at Basin Reserve to be considered

The Transport Agency has confirmed it is looking at two flyover options at the Basin Reserve to relieve traffic congestion in Wellington.

The bridge would run from the northern side of the cricket ground around its outside to the Mt Victoria tunnel.

The proposal is part of the Government's $2.4 billion overhaul of State Highway 1 to Wellington Airport.

Other designs, including a tunnel under the Basin Reserve, were extensively investigated.

The association's central regional director, Jenny Chetwynd, says that option was not feasible because of the steep gradient, swampy ground and difficulty accommodating a portal without causing severe disruption.

Consultation with affected residents will begin in July.
