Goverment to boost cyber security

10:09 pm on 7 June 2011

The Government has announced it will establish a National Cyber Security Centre to help protect government agencies from sophisticated cyber attacks.

Communications and Information Technology Minister Steven Joyce says cyber security is becoming more important to New Zealanders, business and the Government.

Cyber attacks include online terrorist recruitment, as well as the hacking of databases. Recent targets have included Sony and Google.

Mr Joyce says the internet is increasingly being used to gain access to personal information, steal intellectual property, undermine critical services and gain sensitive government-held information for financial or other malicious purposes.

The Cyber Security Strategy has been developed in consultation with industry and government cyber security experts, non-government organisations, academics and international security partners, he says.
