Intense competition behind UK phone hacking - Truth editor

10:00 pm on 18 July 2011

The managing editor of a tabloid newspaper in New Zealand says phone hacking could happen in this country, but not on the scale seen in Britain.

Allegations that staff on the News of the World hacked into thousands of phones have led to arrests and the resignation of London's police commissioner.

Truth Weekender managing editor Chris Baldock says New Zealanders could not imagine the level of competition between newspapers in Britain.

He says it has become common over many years for managers to encourage staff to push ethical boundaries.

Mr Baldock says New Zealand newspapers do not have the same culture.

He says there may be isolated cases of journalists crossing the line, but their managers would never support that.
