Operation aims to reduce effluent on roads

9:05 pm on 20 July 2011

The Motorcycle Safety Advisory Council is optimistic a new project will reduce the danger effluent on roads poses to motorbike riders and motorists.

Operation Green Line aims to stop effluent spills from livestock transportation by getting riders to report spillages by texting DUNG to 244.

The council says it wants to ensure farmers and livestock haulers know where effluent is a problem, and to highlight the need to follow the right practices.

Deputy chair Paul Searancke says spills have long been a problem for motorbike riders, particularly at this time of the year when farmers are moving a lot of stock (with the switchover of dairy sharemilkng herds).

Mr Searancke says the operation isn't anti-farming, but is about working collaboratively to resolve the problem of effluent on roads.

He says many reports have already been received since the operation began, most from areas where dairy farming occurs.
