Rail milestone expected in Auckland

Rail passenger numbers in Auckland are expected to pass a milestone this week.

Auckland Transport says the rolling 12 month tally of passenger trips should exceed 10 million for the first time.

The agency says will be a huge achievement for the city, which has experienced growth of more than 1 million passenger trips in the past year.

It says Auckland should surpass Wellington's annual rail patronage of 11.2 million in about 12 months.

Improved services and the cost of fuel are given as major reasons for this increase.
