Chief District Court Judge Russell Johnson was farewelled at a funeral at Holy Trinity Cathedral in Parnell, Auckland on Saturday.
He practised law for 24 years before being appointed to the District Court Bench in 1993 and became Chief District Court Judge in 2005.
He was a judge of the Pitcairn Islands Supreme Court, and was a Judge-Advocate for the New Zealand Defence Force.
He died suddenly at Auckland Hospital on 24 August after a short illness.
