Christchurch beach ban lifted

8:42 pm on 8 September 2011

The ban on swimming or fishing at Christchurch beaches has been lifted, seven months after a strong earthquake that damaged the city's sewer pipes.

Sewage had to be discharged into waterways while pipes were being repaired following the quake on 22 February, making popular beaches a no-go zone for Cantabrians.

The ban remains in place for the city's rivers, including the Avon and Heathcote, as well as the estuary.

While fishing is now allowed at beaches, health authorities say shellfish should still be avoided.

Beachgoers are also warned to steer clear of the sea for two days after heavy rainfall, which could cause sewage overflows and contaminated water.
