Australian soldiers are being investigated for illegal drug taking while in New Zealand.

An Australian Defence Force source has told Radio New Zealand that as many as eight soldiers in New Zealand on a military exchange programme are accused of taking drugs.

It is believed that there is video footage of the alleged offending.

Both the Australian and New Zealand Defence Forces have confirmed an investigation is underway but are not commenting further.

Two Australian investigators arrived at Linton Military Camp near Palmerston North on Monday.

It's expected they will be there for five days.

The Australian Defence Force has declined to comment further on the matter for the time being.
