Legislation that would allow Hutt City Council officers to enter private property and remove graffiti has been introduced to Parliament.
The Local Bill in the name of the Labour MP Trevor Mallard is aimed at giving the council more power to control graffiti.
The bill would allow council officers to go onto private property to remove any graffiti visible to the public.
The council would have to give, or attempt to give, at least 10 days notice to the owner of the property.
The bill states that graffiti signals a lack of social cohesion, gives a perception of danger and reduces property values, and says the Hutt City Council needs to be able to deal with it more effectively.
