New sports centre opening in Christchurch

11:59 am on 8 October 2011

A new council-owned sports and recreation centre is to open in Christchurch this week bringing some relief to the city which lost two major sports centres in the February earthquake.

The Graham Condon Recreation and Sports Centre in Papanui has a 25-metre swimming pool, basket ball court and gym facilities and will open to the public on Monday.

The complex was named after paralympic champion and former councillor Graham Condon who was killed when his bike was hit by a car in 2007.

Christchurch City Council hopes the new centre will help relieve some of the pressure on its two remaining sports centres, Jellie Park and the Pioneer Recreation and Sports centre.

The QEII and Centennial recreation and sports centres were ruined in the earthquake.
