Plea to stop vehicle access to Wellington south coast

12:18 pm on 1 November 2011

Wellington City Council and coastal residents say they are fed up with some four-wheel-drive owners and trail-bike riders going off track and wrecking unique environments.

The council says more damage was done last weekend to the coast adjacent to a track between Owhiro Bay, Red Rocks and Karori Stream.

City councillor Helene Ritchie says local people and walkers in the area are becoming frustrated and want the track shut to vehicle traffic.

Ms Ritchie says the council has not yet reached a point where it will do that.

She says the track remains open to vehicles except on Sundays when it is left for walkers.

Ms Ritchie says the council, police and the Cross Country Vehicle Club have been working together for years to promote safe driving along the coast.
