Pomare state house residents plan occupation

8:23 pm on 18 November 2011

Former residents of Housing New Zealand homes in a Lower Hutt suburb are planning an occupation.

The houses on Farmer Crescent in Pomare are being knocked down ahead of a redevelopment.

Community spokesperson Dina Awarau says people want to be able to move back once that is done but only a small proportion will be able to do so, as the new properties will be a mix of Housing New Zealand, social and private housing.

Ms Awarau says locals decided at a meeting earlier this week to set up tents on the site of their demolished homes on Saturday morning.

Police say the residents have the right to protest but will step if if they are required to keep the peace.

Housing New Zealand says it is disappointed the residents have decided to take this action.
