Former Housing New Zealand tenants in the Lower Hutt suburb of Pomare are protesting against the mass demolition of houses.
Almost 100 properties are being knocked down to make way for a redevelopment with a mix of Housing New Zealand and private housing.
Several tents have been raised by former tenants.
Spokesperson Dina Awarau says they want more new Housing New Zealand homes because only some will have the chance to return.
She says the agency has turned down that request.
