Organiser of fatal attack granted parole

8:20 pm on 9 December 2011

The man imprisoned for helping organise an attack which killed Kapiti man Raymond Piper is to be freed on parole in January.

Sean Hawke, 51, has served 10 months in jail for his role in the killing.

Hawke and his sister Susan Bragger, 45, paid Mongrel Mob member Ainsley Anderson to beat up Mr Piper, who was Bragger's son-in-law.

Instead, Anderson stabbed Mr Piper to death.

Hawke and Bragger were each sentenced to three years in jail.

A statement from the Parole Board says it has no choice but to release Hawke. It says it must consider parole when offenders have served one third of their sentence and if they are deemed of no risk they must be released.

A Parole Board spokesperson says Hawke will be released with a curfew and conditions which restrict him from going near any areas that may affect Mr Piper's family.

The board says it does not think Bragger has dealt with the reasons for her offending and is not able to control those impulses.

Bragger to remain in jail

Parole for Susan Bragger has been denied.

The Parole Board says it does not think she has dealt with the reasons for her offending and is not able to control those impulses.

The parole decision for Bragger says she has difficulty mixing with mainstream offenders and fears for her safety in prison.

She is kept separate from the other prisoners and has been prevented from attending the Kowhiritanga programme which offers group rehabilitation for female offenders.
