Blogger supports idea of regulator

A blogger and media commentator says there is merit in a proposal to regulate blogs and online news services.

The Law Commission has released a report recommending online news services and bloggers be regulated by a new authority, which would also cover traditional print and broadcast media.

Russell Brown, who runs the Public Address website, says under the current system people who feel they have been dealt with unfairly by a blog or news website have no way to lay a complaint without taking legal action.

Mr Brown says the report also suggests bloggers should be granted the rights enjoyed by traditional media, such as the privilege to cover court and parliamentary proceedings.

He says that could prove a strong incentive to bloggers to sign up to the regulator.
