Apple are being picked and packed on time because there are sufficient workers this season.

More people are turning to the horticulture sector for work as urban unemployment levels rise, say fruit and vegetable growers.

Horticulture New Zealand says there is a steady supply of local labour available, along with workers from the Pacific Islands under the Recognised Seasonal Employer Scheme.

The summerfruit season is drawing to a close, but the apple harvest is well under way.

Horticulture New Zealand chief executive Peter Silcock says the fruit is being picked and packed on time because there are sufficient workers available.
