Logging blamed for Pohara flood damage

9:13 am on 18 December 2011

West Coast Tasman MP Damien O'Connor says logging practices may be to blame for the floods that have caused extensive damage in the Golden Bay settlement of Pohara.

Twenty houses have been flooded and the camping ground is closed because it has no power or sewerage, just before the busiest time of the year.

Mr O'Connor says logs left behind when trees are felled form dams in gullies in the hills above Pohara.

He says water builds up after heavy rain and is then released in dangerous torrents.

Mr O'Connor says the same thing happened at Tapawera south of Nelson last year when a wall of logs from a plantation crashed on top of houses, forcing the evacuation of 22 of them.
